A Canadian in China

Wednesday, March 15, 2006
when saw this, it explain a lot question people ask me about china:

" Ah, but I'm a Canadian posting from Beijing and I can't really say that too much is censored here relative to what people in the "outside" world would think. Some sites like wikipedia, BBC, and anything related to the f*lun g*ng are blocked. But if you could only see the amount of western media and even porn that comes through. You would never guess that things are censored at all.

Most people have NO clue what it's like over here. In fact, if you wanted, you could even live a sheltered life with all the "comforts" of western society - get your latte at Starbucks in the morning on your way to the office, have lunch at KFC or McDonald's, and go for dinner at a TGI Fridays followed by a beer at the Irish brewpub.

Also China is probably the most capitalist place I've ever been to, and I've been to over 30 countries. Few markets could be freer than this country in terms of small business and individuals. Pretty much every man for himself and caveat emptor. It's when it comes to big business and industry that this country is *** backwards, but it catches up to the west a little more with each passing day. "
